Answering questions from curious readers

I have an employee who I know can do so much better, but they’re not motivated. I don’t know whether I should keep trying or let them go. There’s so much potential!

When dealing with an employee who shows potential but appears unmotivated, it’s important to consider the intrinsic and extrinsic motivations at play. As you’ve noted, there’s potential within this individual, but the lack of motivation might be tied to how they perceive their role, the company culture, or the alignment with their personal goals and values.

Bear thinking about how to motivate an employee

First, analyze whether the work you’re offering aligns with their aspirations and growth path. In a startup context, different individuals are inspired by distinct factors. Some might join a startup for the experience, camaraderie, and potential, even at a pay cut, while others will only thrive in environments that offer particular developmental opportunities or job stability join a startup for the experience.

It’s also beneficial to reflect on whether there’s a meaningful mission and interesting work that resonates with this employee. A compelling mission can be a significant motivator and can help in connecting their daily tasks to larger goals. Moreover, fostering a work environment where their contributions feel valuable and visible might ignite their latent motivation meaningful. This sense of connection and purpose is even more critical in scaled environments where the personal impact might not seem immediately obvious connect everyone’s work to something bigger than any of us.

If, after these considerations, the gap between potential and performance remains significant, it might be time to consider whether the fit between employee and company is correct. Sometimes, the best decision for both the individual and the company is to part ways, allowing them to find a role where motivation and potential align more naturally. The ultimate goal is to nurture an environment where everyone is motivated and thriving, both individually and collectively.
